How far is Woodville Palace from Mall Road?
About 800 metres. It is a walk of roughly ten minutes down to us, and a slightly more honest twenty back up — Shimla is a hill station, and the return leg is uphill the whole way. Taxis and autos run the route constantly.
Can I drive right up to the hotel?
Yes. Unlike most heritage properties in Shimla, Woodville has vehicle access to the door and free parking for more than eighty cars on the estate. Much of central Shimla is a no-vehicle zone, so this is worth knowing before you book elsewhere.
Which airport should I fly into?
Shimla’s own airport at Jubbarhatti is about 22 km away but has very limited service. Most guests fly to Chandigarh (roughly 115 km, four hours by road) or Delhi, and drive up from there.
Is the toy train worth it?
The Kalka–Shimla narrow-gauge railway is a UNESCO World Heritage line and takes five to six hours to climb 96 km through 102 tunnels. It is slower than the road and that is the entire point. Book well ahead in season. Shimla Railway Station is 4.4 km from us.
When is the best time to visit?
March to June is the main season, warm and busy. July to September brings the monsoon, when the Deodars are at their greenest and the hill mist comes through the estate. December to February is cold and quiet, with occasional snow — the rooms have central heating.
